چکیده

Given a countable o-minimal theory T , we characterize the Borel complexity of isomorphism for countable models of T up to two model-theoretic invariants. If T admits a nonsimple type, then it is shown to be Borel complete by embedding the isomorphism problem for linear orders into the isomorphism problem for models of T . This is done by constructing models with specific linear orders in the tail of the Archimedean ladder of a suitable nonsimple type. If the theory admits no nonsimple types, then we use Mayer’s characterization of isomorphism for such theories to compute invariants for countable models. If the theory is small, then the invariant is real-valued, and therefore its isomorphism relation is smooth. If not, the invariant corresponds to a countable set of reals, and therefore the isomorphism relation is Borel equivalent to F2. Combining these two results, we conclude that (Mod(T ),∼=) is either maximally complicated or maximally uncomplicated (subject to completely general model-theoretic lower bounds based on the number of types and the number of countable models).

The Borel Complexity of Isomorphism for Some First-order Theories

Title of dissertation: THE BOREL COMPLEXITY OF ISOMORPHISM FOR SOME FIRST-ORDER THEORIES Richard Rast, Doctor of Philosophy, 2016 Dissertation directed by: Professor Michael C. The Borel Complexity of Isomorphism for Theories with Many Types

During the Notre Dame workshop on Vaught’s Conjecture, Hjorth and Kechris asked which Borel equivalence relations can arise as the isomorphism relation for models of a first order theory. In particular, they asked if the isomorphism relation can be essentially countable but not tame. We show this is not possible if the theory has uncountably many types. I am grateful to the logic group at Notre...

Isomorphism of Homogeneous Structures

We consider the complexity of the isomorphism relation on countable first-order structures with transitive automorphism groups. We use the theory of Borel reducibility of equivalence relations to show that the isomorphism problem for vertex-transitive graphs is as complicated as the isomorphism problem for arbitrary graphs, and determine for which first-order languages the isomorphism problem f...

Concerning the frame of minimal prime ideals of pointfree function rings

Let $L$ be a completely regular frame and $mathcal{R}L$ be the ring of continuous real-valued functions on $L$. We study the frame $mathfrak{O}(Min(mathcal{R}L))$ of minimal prime ideals of $mathcal{R}L$ in relation to $beta L$. For $Iinbeta L$, denote by $textit{textbf{O}}^I$ the ideal ${alphainmathcal{R}Lmidcozalphain I}$ of $mathcal{R}L$. We show that sending $I$ to the set of minimal prime ...

Generalized Descriptive Set Theory and Classification Theory

The field of descriptive set theory is mainly concerned with studying subsets of the space of all countable binary sequences. In this paper we study the generalization where countable is replaced by uncountable. We explore properties of generalized Baire and Cantor spaces, equivalence relations and their Borel reducibility. The study shows that the descriptive set theory looks very different in...
